Alicia “ROAR” Buisst
The concept for ROAR! Strategies was inspired by a quote that a friend sent me.
"Until the lion tells his side of the story, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” - African Proverb
It made me stop and think: Who is telling MY story? Is it someone else or is it ME?
WHOA! I decided right there and then that I'm going to tell MY story - with passion, purpose and power. I’m going to embrace the ROAR within - and help others find their ROAR!
Since the day that I found a ball-point pen at the tender age of 3 years old and began to write words - all over the walls, the floor and and my legs - I loved to write. I aspired to become a writer in high school, earned a BA in literature and history, worked in the performing arts and then - of course - worked in commercial real estate for 16 years.
My creative writing surfaced in 2008 when I seized an opportunity to create a program platform to introduce real estate careers - along with a heaping of self-empowerment and life skills - to Detroit area high-school girls: CREW Careers. A-HA! A synergy of words and experience = passion found! I was in my element.
My experience with Dale Carnegie training - as a graduate assistant and instructor - gave me firm footing in public speaking and an ability to communicate with all kinds of people and in all kinds of situations. I created and facilitated networking events, wrote and gave speeches, developed fundraising themes and platforms, wrote scripts and feature articles.
But then the pen was taken from my hand. In 2006 I was diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome, a type of blood cancer), had a BMT (bone marrow transplant) in 2009, squeaked back across the survival-line after infectious pneumonia on New Year's Eve and spent 2-years recovering from all of the above.
Five years of being cancer-free were spent simply enjoying the simple pleasures of life, working part-time at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, learning to run and fundraising with Team in Training, and writing my book about my cancer journey and recovery.
STOP! In October 2015, I relapsed into AML (acute myeloid leukemia) - the worst kind of blood cancer. Two more months of intense chemotherapy, hospitalization and a quadruple-dose of white-blood cells (thank you big brother Walt) to super-charge my immune system and ... I'm blessed, lucky and grateful beyond words - back in remission. And ...
GO! I'm ROARING my story! I'm writing my book about my journey to help others, not just with blood cancer, but anyone who has experienced a trauma in their lives. ROAR is about how I created my road-map through my adversity. My hope is that it helps others believe that they can create their own map and get to their destination. Look for ROAR excerpts on this website soon!
ROAR! And while I write and ROAR! my story I want to help others ROAR their story! ROAR Strategies can help anyone - individual or business - to command communication with a command of communication: thought, design and strategy to define your ROAR to the world!
